This e-portfolio is due for assessment in a matter of days. So far, I think I have done a fairly good job…I have put a lot of work into the layout and aesthetics of the portfolio and have tried to ensure I have covered all the content that is required. I have been working on a few more pages for the e-portfolio, such as more topics that will go under the “Weekly Workshops” main page and also a “ICT in the classroom” page. I also need to add the evidence to my “Professional Evidence” page. These pages that I have been working on are saved as drafts at the moment…but stay tuned as all will be revealed soon!

Two Home/Welcome Links-HELP PLEASE

Many themes on WordPress have a ”Home” page link hard coded into the navigation menu. Due to this, I have a link in the navigation menu titled “Home” and another titled “Welcome!”, both of which are directed to the page titled “Welcome!”. To fix this problem I have been researching how to delete the “Home” link in the navigation menu. Many forums suggested changing the coding, however this is not an option as I would have to pay in order to change it. I also found a section in WordPress Support titled “Hide Pages” which stated that “You can hide the second link by editing the page, and setting another page as the Parent in the Attributes module. This will work for any other top level pages as well. It doesn’t have to be a page titled “Home” or a page set as a static front page to hide it”. This does hide one of the links, however, it means the “Welcome!” page isn’t where it belongs.

If anyone knows how to fix the problem, your help would be much appreciated…just post a comment!

Learnt how to link to a PDF document

To create a link to a PDF document, such as I have for my resume, simply:

Click on the “Add media” icon
Ensure the “From Computer” tab is selected
Browse for a file
Click on “Upload”
Fill in the title of your document
Click on “File URL”, located toward the bottom of the pop up box
Click “Insert into Post” button

Added video to my ‘Who is Rachel?’ page!

After hours of work I have finally finished creating a video that includes pictures of me and audio and then embedded this video into the ‘Who is Rachel?’ page on this wordpress site.

I have aimed to add something a little different to what everyone else has on their about me page, but you never know, this might just start the trend of everyone doing it!

I created the movie in Windows Movie Maker on my laptop. Which in theory is not difficult, you simply import the images you would like to use as well as an audio file into Windows Movie Maker, place them in the story board and then add transitions and effects. However, by the time you choose the images you want, get them in order, experiment with different effects and transitions and then add them, it takes a lot of time.

Also I had to learn how to cut down the audio file as it played longer then the images, this was not difficult, I simply went into the timeline, went to the end of the audio and then shortened it by dragging the red line to the time I wanted.

Once I had finished my video, I published it to my desktop and then tried to upload it into my wordpress page via the add video icon…this did not work, therefore I had to upload the movie onto YouTube and embed the video into my wordpress page by clicking on the add video icon, then selecting the URL tab e.t.c.

This video was made to add a more personal touch to my wordpress page and is a way of digitally storytelling to my audience…you. I hope you enjoy it!

First Assessment of WordPress

After Des looked at my wordpress site for marking, he provided feeback on what I could do to improve my site. He suggested that I create more white space, make my name more dominant and add a resume. Therefore, so far, I have added images that are used as page dividers and am currently in the process of creating a resume. Also I was unhappy with the mark I received for navigation, font etc so I have changed the theme which has clearer font and the links are more visible. For the header graphic, I am going to use photoshop to create one to suit my personality and that will be aesthetically pleasing. Will keep you posted!

Learnt how to embed YouTube Video Into WordPress

I found a YouTube video on ICT but was unable to embed it into my WordPress page. So i found the below video on how to embed YouTube videos in a WordPress page. All you do is go to Users, then Your Profile then tick the ‘Disable the visual editor while writing’ box. Then go tothe page/post which you want to embed the video and click the add video icon which above the text toolbar next to the words Upload/Insert and then simply follow the directions it gives you.

WOOHOO-learnt how to make the My Thoughts page my blog!

After an hour or so of trying to figure out how to make the my thoughts page on my wordpress site my blog page I have finally done it and its all thanks to Natalie Hutchinson…so thankyou Natalie. I spent a very long time using Google to try and find out how to put my blog into the wordpress page and then decided to look at some other peoples wordpress pages…lucky for me Natalie decided to share what she learnt on her blog! So I will now also write how you do it incase anyone else is having the same problem and reads this! First create the page you would like your blog to appear in, then go to the Setting menu, then Reading…at the top of the page select the static option, then in the front page dropbox select the name of the page you want for your front page e.g. welcome, then in the dropbox in the posts page option, select the page you would like your blog to appear in…in my case my thoughts! So, there you go…I learnt not only something new about WordPress but also learnt that students teach other students too (sometimes without realising it!).
